【Crossing Cultures through Architecture: The Journey of Community Development at The Centre for World Citizens】

Architecture is not just about buildings, it can serve as a bridge that transcends cultural barriers and serves as an engine for community development. Dr. Chiu Chen-Yu, the CEO of the Center, recently participated in an interview with the Turkish architectural program “Architects Talking with Kalebodur” (Kalebodur’la Mimarlar Konuşuyor), where he shared insights into a special architectural project located in Reyhanli Turkey – The Centre for World Citizens (referred to as the Center) .

The design of the Center aims to create a community hub that provides a space for integration for both Turkish residents and Syrian refugees, while closely intertwining architecture with intercultural exchange and community development. By taking advantage of architectural techniques, the center’s design has helped to transform a once-divided community between two countries into a friendly space to promote intercultural communication .

From a refugee camp to a community center, we have witnessed the Center’s remarkable transformation of military facilities into a vibrant community hub, where Turkish residents and Syrian refugees have been able to find shelter, hope, and belonging . Through collaboration with local residents and students, we have seen the power of architecture and how it has fostered a nurturing environment for this community .

In this era of globalization, architects not only need professional skills and knowledge but also an understanding and awareness of intercultural exchange and community development. Hopefully through such efforts, we can collectively create a more inclusive and beautiful world .
